A Day on the Road
“My day usually starts between 5am and 6am. I arrive at the mill and check in with the transport team, then have a brew before collecting the keys and paperwork. I then drive to the loading bay to collect feed. After signing in on our system, the feed is automatically moved from the finished bins along conveyor belts and dropped into the relevant compartments. Before heading out, I complete checks around the vehicle to ensure it is roadworthy and that the load corresponds with the run sheets. These checks are recorded on paper and handed in to the office. I also double-check the farm addresses and delivery notes.”
“I then deliver feed to farms, which may be in Anglesey, Shropshire or further afield. The planning team works hard to keep deliveries efficient while considering drivers’ tachos, mill production and traffic levels. After completing my deliveries, I head back to base. Once back, I wash down the lorry, complete end-of-day checks and hand in the paperwork before checking in with the transportation team.”
Working Through Covid-19
“ForFarmers has continued to supply animal feed throughout the Coronavirus outbreak. As drivers, we were classified as key workers. We adapted our ways of working—for example, I now ring the farmer en-route to confirm ETA and bin numbers so I can deliver contact-free. There are also extra sanitising and hygiene protocols, which have now become routine. I must say customers and colleagues have been really considerate during these difficult times. It highlights that the agricultural industry pulls together when things get tough.”
Being Part of One Team
“For the large majority of hours I work on my own; however, I always feel supported by the transport team. They are always at the end of the phone. We’re a strong team and get on really well.
