Jamie Horner Sales manager, Marsdens Game Feeds

Tell us a little bit about your career so far?

Over time, I have had a whole array of jobs from working on power stations to building sites. Previous to working for Marsdens, I was Head Forester on a large private estate in South Yorkshire.

In 2010 I became a self employed sales agent for Marsdens Game Feeds before going employed in 2020. In May 2024, I was lucky enough to be appointed sales manager.

What does your role involve?

I manage a team of six, and have the responsibility of managing and supporting merchants across the country. Game is very seasonal and from January to June we are pricing and out visiting customers and prospects. From May through to October we are extremely busy, managing a large amount of orders daily, working closely with customer services and supply chain teams within the business. Every day is different from giving advice to customers, recommending feed programmes and continuously building relationships. From October, I spend a lot of time shooting or on shoots alongside customers.

In addition to my Marsdens role, I manage and run Iford Downs shoot on behalf of Thorney Moss, a large customer of Marsdens.

What do you like about working with game keepers and shoot managers?

I get to visit some of the most beautiful private estates in the UK and see some of the most diverse wildlife which is the bi-product of our shooting industry which manages the land. I have two dogs which I get to walk over some of the most beautiful heathland and moorland.

Through my work, I meet some of the most remarkable people. Some head keepers are extremely interesting to speak to, due to shared passions including rare species of birds.

How have you continued to develop your career?

I have been able to develop my career over time as my experience has grown. I have also been extremely lucky to have a mentor like Duncan Wheatley who has helped me gain a better understanding of the industry and given me a better handle on facts, figures and costs.

What do you like about working at ForFarmers?

I really enjoy working with the people who make up our leisure team. We don’t meet up enough but when we do, we all get on so well.

How do you spend your time outside work?

When I am not working, I enjoy walking my dogs, shooting and bird watching.
